Parish Groups
Bible Study
The Bible Study Group is a shared English Martyrs-Our Lady's activity. It meets at 7.30 on the second Friday of every month except August (and see below for what happens in Lent). The venue and theme are advertised in advance in both parish newsletters.
SVP
The Society of St Vincent de Paul is an international Catholic organisation and was founded in Paris in 1833 by a young French student called Frederic Ozanam (now beatified), based on the work done in Paris many years earlier by St Vincent himself. It's main aim was to bring help to the many disadvantaged people in the areas where the society worked and to sanctify its members through prayer and spiritual reading.
Childrens Liturgy
Children are welcome at English Martyrs' Church. We have a Children's Liturgy Group during the 10.30am Mass on Sunday. There is also a Teen Liturgy for those aged about 10 and above.
Music Group
The parish music group accompanies the hymns once a month at 10.30 mass.
Union of Catholic Mothers
The Union of catholic Mothers began in 1913. We are a national organization with foundations in many dioceses and have a National Committee, diocesan committees and parish foundations. English Martyrs’ is one of three foundations in York, the others being St Ælred’s and St Margaret Clitherow’s.
Knights of St. Columba
The Knights of St. Columba was founded in Glasgow in 1919, on the initiative of Patrick J. O’Callaghan, and by the early 1920s there were Councils south of the border too. It is an Order of Catholic laymen dedicated to the service of the Church and fellow man.
Drama
The parish has a thriving drama group. We have put on a highly entertaining and successful pantomime of Cinderella, and will be putting on a light-hearted comedy play this October.
